Are you a business owner? Here are 10 tips to help you relax on your next holiday

Summer may be coming to an end but it’s not too late to take some well-earned time off if you haven’t already. Of course, as a business owner, if you do manage to get away it’s hard to switch off and there’s always the temptation to take work with you. With that in mind, here are 10 tips to help the business owner relax on holiday…

Scheduling ahead is key

Try and get as much done as possible before you leave, this way you won’t come back to a mountain of work. And don’t schedule in anything important for your first week back, this will help you ease back in when you do return.

Plan to not make plans

Delegate tasks if possible and tell clients that you will answer any queries when you return. Also, make sure your out-of-office email is set up, including information for people who can be contacted in your absence.

Note it down

If you think that you might forget an important detail about a project whilst you’re away, make a clear note of it before you go. Knowing that you’re fully prepared for your return will help you relax.

Download an app

Meditation and sleep apps have gained momentum over recent years in helping people switch off – Headspace and Calm have gained 6 million downloads between them (and counting). While keeping away from all devices is key to feeling less distracted, these apps could actually help you make the most of your holiday.

Try something new

If you find it hard to relax when not being productive, why not learn a new skill on your trip? Doing something new is a tried and tested technique for anxiety sufferers, so this will help you forget about your work worries and ultimately help you relax!

Focus on you

Your health and well-being should be the main focus when taking a holiday. It’s not only an opportunity to step away from your workload but also a chance to be your best self. Take advantage of the fresh food and local delicacies on offer, go to that fitness class, book that massage. This is your chance to be selfish, you’ve earnt it.

Read

Even if you’re not much of a reader, take a book with you (or download an audiobook). It doesn’t matter what genre – a little reading can really help you unwind. This useful blog further explains why reading can be beneficial.

If you have to work, be smart

If you’re self-employed and simply must do some work whilst away, pick a set time to do it each day. And don’t deviate from this time. After all, a (little) work is the perfect excuse for a cocktail or two.

Accept not being able to control everything

There will be tasks that you simply aren’t able to oversee (or will have to wait until you return) – you must accept this. You deserve a break, some things can wait. And if they can’t, plan to get them done before you leave.

And there you have it – our tips to making the most of your time off. We hope they help … happy holidays!
